Ethical Leadership: What Does That Really Mean?

In 2019, Andy Hargreaves wrote, “One way to think about ethical leadership is that while morality is about right and wrong, ethics is about how to judge what’s right and wrong, and how to do what’s right.”

So how do we do judge what the right actions are?

Antiracism, gender discrimination, COVID-19, as well as the safety of LGBTQ students are issues that need our best ethical thinking. For some, these issues are controversial; for others, these issues are necessary to address for the health of a school community. Join host Peter DeWitt as he sits down with researchers Andy Hargreaves and Allison Skerrett to discuss practical steps you can take to bring deeper ethical thinking to your schools and districts.

Peter DeWitt
Author, Finding Common Ground Opinion Blogger

DeWitt was a K-5 teacher for 11 years and a principal for eight. He is an independent researcher who runs competency-based workshops nationally and internationally with a focus on school leadership, collaborative cultures, instructional leadership, and inclusive school climates. His work has been adopted at the state and university levels, and he works with school districts, school boards, regional networks, and ministries of education across North America, Australia, Scandinavia, and the United Kingdom. He is also Visible Learning Trainer who works with John Hattie.

In 2020, DeWitt created the Educational Leadership Collective—a team of women and men from the United States and Canada who focus on all aspects of school leadership, including instructional leadership, instructional coaching, equity, and marginalized populations, as well as how to build collective efficacy.

DeWitt is the author of seven books, including Instructional Leadership: Creating Practice Out of Theory (Corwin, 2020).

Andy Hargreaves
Director, CHENINE (Change, Engagement & Innovation in Education), University of Ottawa

Hargreaves is director of CHENINE (Change, Engagement and Innovation in Education) at the University of Ottawa and research professor in the Lynch School of Education and Human Development at Boston College. He is the past president of the International Congress of School Effectiveness and Improvement, a recent adviser in education to the Premier of Ontario and currently to the First Minister of Scotland. He is the founder of the ARC Education—a group of nations committed to excellence, equity, wellbeing, inclusion, democracy, and human rights.

Hargreaves has consulted with the OECD, the World Bank, governments, universities, and teachers' unions worldwide. Andy’s more than 30 books have attracted multiple Outstanding Writing Awards – including the prestigious 2015 Grawemeyer Award in Education for Professional Capital (with Michael Fullan). He has been honored with the 2016 Horace Mann Award in the United States and the Robert Owen Award in Scotland for services to public education. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. His most recent book is Moving: A Memoir of Social Mobility and Education.

Allison Skerrett
Professor of Language and Literacy Studies, University of Texas, Austin

Skerrett is a professor in the language and literacy studies program and an affiliate faculty member in the cultural studies in education program at the University of Texas, Austin. She is also the director of Teacher Education in the College of Education at the university. Skerrett serves as the director and faculty adviser for the University of Texas Urban Teachers secondary English teacher education programs. Her teaching and research focus on secondary English education in urban contexts, adolescent literacy practices in and outside school, transnational youths' literacy practices and learning, and sociocultural influences on teaching and learning.
