What the Research Says
More Schools Are Hiring Police, Yet Serious Violence Is on the Rise
The latest school safety figures from the U.S. Department of Education point to steady increases in the number of schools with school resource officers on campus, as well as a recent uptick in "serious violence."
Schools also reported increasing their efforts to use "restorative practices" and alternative forms of discipline meant to keep students in schools rather than at home or in detention facilities.
The survey collected responses during the 2017-18 school year from a nationally representative sample of schools.
