Frustrated with test scores, education official tosses chair
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's education commissioner has thrown a chair to show frustration with low test scores while appearing on a local television show.
Commissioner Ken Wagner was taping an episode of "Dan Yorke State of Mind" on WPRI-TV on Tuesday when Yorke brought up recently-released standardized test scores that showed Rhode Island students lagging behind their peers in Massachusetts.
Yorke told Wagner that some coaches hold carrots to get performance, "then there's Bobby Knight." The former Indiana and Texas Tech basketball coach famously threw a chair across the floor during a game to protest a call.
Wagner jokingly threw his chair. He said the scores aren't acceptable and "it's not true that our kids can't do it. They can do it!"
Yorke replied, "Be careful what you ask for."
