New Orleans Headed Toward All-Charter Status
The principals of the five remaining traditional public schools in New Orleans have applied to convert the schools into charters.
If Orleans Parish Superintendent Henderson Lewis Jr. approves the application, New Orleans will become the country's first all-charter city. Lewis in December asked for applications from organizations to run the existing schools or create new charters.
The Lens, a news website, reported that ExCEED Network filed an application late last month with the district to run the remaining five schools. More than 90 percent of public school students in the city already attend charter schools.
