Paolo DeMaria, who previously worked for the Ohio education department, has been appointed the next schools superintendent by the Ohio board of education.

He also has served as an adviser to the state Senate and to former Republican Govs. George Voinovich and Bob Taft.

DeMaria replaces Richard Ross, who retired at the end of last year after a contentious two-year tenure.
