Baltimore Gets Federal Grant to Help Student Recovery
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the Baltimore district a nearly $300,000 grant to aid with its ongoing efforts to help students and schools recover from unrest following the death of a man in police custody last year.
Protests over the death of Freddie Gray turned into a night of fires and looting in April. Some students walked out of school that day, and the district cancelled classes the day after the peak of the unrest.
The grant will help underwrite such measures as hiring additional full-time social workers and psychologists to support the schools in restoring the learning environment.
