Most of the students taking advantage of Nevada's new, and controversial, education savings accounts come from the wealthier suburbs of Las Vegas, according to data released last week by the state treasurer's office.

Very few applications for Nevada's voucher-like program, considered the most sweeping of its kind in the nation, are coming from the inner city, the data show. Applications also tend to come from communities that already have high private school enrollments.

Many opponents of the program have contended that the system caters to wealthy families who want to get out of the public school system.
