When Alabama lawmakers got reimbursed last month for travel expenses, the money came out of the state's education budget.

In all, the legislature will get about $3.85 million from the Education Trust Fund this fiscal year. The legislature is one of several state agencies that found its way into the education budget when the general fund started getting tight.

Secretary of the Senate Pat Harris said a number of students come through the Statehouse each year, so there is an education component to it.

Education officials point out schools aren't being adequately funded by the state, leaving districts to make up the difference.
