Embattled Minneapolis schools Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson, whose district has struggled to meet its goals of closing the achievement gap between white and minority students, abruptly resigned, citing family commitments. School officials said they did not ask for her resignation.
Her departure comes less than a month after the school board gave her low marks for boosting student achievement. The district is facing one of the largest achievement gaps in the nation, dramatically disproportionate suspension rates for students of color, and a growing number of parents pulling their students from city schools.
