News in Brief
Florida to Eliminate Use of Social Security Numbers
As of July 1, the Florida education department will no longer use Social Security numbers to identify students. But that's little relief to nearly 300 Monroe County students whose personal information was accidentally sent out via email last month.
The Social Security numbers and other "personally identifiable student information" of 290 sophomores were inadvertently released when the district disseminated the results of the writing portion of the state test.
State legislation passed during the session that ended in May calls for the creation of a Florida student-identification number.
