Ready for College
"Reshaping the College Transition"
An analysis finds many states are taking steps to assess early whether high school students are prepared for college.
Some form of early-college-readiness assessments are offered in 38 states, and 29 states have structured interventions to help reduce the need for remedial coursework for incoming college freshman, according to the review by the Community College Research Center.
The assessments being used in 11th grade include Accuplacer or Compass, commonly used for community college placement; the ACT or SAT college-admission exam; and state-developed accountability tests, such as those used in California's Early Assessment Program. Many states that are not testing now are expected to use new assessments being developed for the Common Core State Standards, the researchers note.
