Efforts are afoot in Massachusetts and Texas to raise caps on the number of charter schools.
In Texas, a Senate bill would raise the cap on the number of charters allowed from the current limit of 215 to 305 in 2019. (A group with one charter from the state can open multiple charter schools.) Meanwhile, the House education committee approved a bill that would raise the cap to 275 in 2019.
In Massachusetts, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino has pushed state legislation that would lift a cap on the number of “in district” charter schools in his city that are controlled by a committee whose members he appoints.
