Sam Houston High School was placed on the San Antonio district’s closure list in 2009 after years of being rated academically unacceptable. The threat of losing a beloved institution in a predominantly African-American neighborhood spurred photojournalist Lisa Krantz to spend a year documenting students and teachers for the San Antonio Express-News, during what was expected to be the school’s last academic year. Armed with a new principal and renewed spirit, the school was given the chance to turn around.
