The Detroit school board has sued the district’s state-appointed financial manager, trying to force him to consult with it on the implementation of his plans to overhaul the struggling district.

The lawsuit filed Aug. 17 in Wayne County Circuit Court says Robert C. Bobb is overstepping his role by making decisions on academics and curriculum. Mr. Bobb says the district faces a $259 million budget deficit. ("Decline and Fall," Aug. 12, 2009.)

Mr. Bobb has laid off about 2,400 employees, including some 1,000 teachers. He also has ordered audits aimed at uncovering waste, theft, and fraud. He said he will turn the matter of the suit over to lawyers.
