Lumina Foundation Grants

Lumina Foundation for Education, an Indianapolis-based nonprofit organization that supports efforts to improve college access and student success, has awarded $16.8 million in grants to 47 nonprofit groups, community organizations, and universities in 19 states that have worked to make a college education more feasible for high school students. The recipients, by state, include the following:

California: Campaign for College Opportunity, Oakland; National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, San Jose; Orangewood Children’s Foundation, Santa Ana; Southern California Collaborative for College Access, Los Angeles; WestEd, San Francisco.
Colorado: National Conference of State Legislatures, Denver; National Scholarship Providers Association, Denver; Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, Boulder.
Connecticut: Connecticut Association of Professional Financial Aid Administrators, Inc., Manchester.
District of Columbia: Achieve, Inc.; American Association of Community Colleges; American Council on Education; The Education Trust Inc.; Education Writers Association; Institute for Higher Education Policy; National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.
Georgia: Helping Teens Succeed, Inc., Atlanta.
Illinois: The Communications Network, Naperville; University of Illinois Board of Trustees, Champaign.
Indiana: Central Indiana Community Foundation, Indianapolis; The Central Indiana Educational Service Center, Indianapolis; Learn More Indiana, Indianapolis; Marion County Commission on Youth, Inc., Indianapolis; Metropolitan School District of Perry Township, Indianapolis; Purdue University, West Lafayette; University of Indianapolis, Indianapolis.

Nonfiction Grants

Heinemann-Raintree, a Chicago-based publisher of children’s nonfiction, has awarded a $5,000 Making the Nonfiction Connection Classroom Grant to Sharon D. Pickering, Karin Keith, and Valerie Orfield of North Side Elementary School in Johnson City, Tenn., and a $5,000 Making the Nonfiction Connection Library Grant to Shonda Brisco of Peaster Independent School District in Weatherford, Texas. These grants will help to expand the schools’ library nonfiction collections, as well as implement math and science instructional units.
