Drawing Distinctions in ‘Teaching to the Test’
September 4, 2007
To the Editor:
I always read with interest pieces about teaching to the test ("Teaching With the Test, Not to the Test," Commentary, Aug. 15, 2007). In my college classes in assessment, I always ask, “Should we teach to the test?” and the resounding answer is always, “No!” But I say, “Yes!” If students are to be successful on any test, we had better teach to the test. The real problem is when we teach the test itself.
