The Seattle school board has decided unanimously to offer the superintendency of the district to Maria Goodloe-Johnson, who is now the head of the Charleston, S.C., schools.

She was one of two finalists for the position in a national search that began in November to replace Raj Manhas, who will step down in August. The other finalist, Gregory Thornton, the chief academic officer of the Philadelphia school district, withdrew from consideration.

Ms. Goodloe-Johnson, a career educator, is a 2003 graduate of the Broad Superintendents Academy, run by the Los Angeles-based Broad Foundation to train managers for urban districts.
