David Long, the superintendent of the Riverside County Office of Education, has been appointed California’s new education secretary by Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In the position, which does not require confirmation by the state Senate, he will serve as an educator adviser to the governor.

A former principal and district superintendent, Mr. Long, 67, began his education career in 1961 as a teacher and athletic coach in Sheffield, Iowa.
