Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon, R-Calif., last week introduced a bill that would provide private school vouchers for students in persistently low-performing schools under the No Child Left Behind Act. The measure, which closely tracks a proposal President Bush unveiled in January as part of his proposal to reauthorize the 5-year-old law, would provide up to $4,000 for students in such schools to attend a secular or religious private school. Students also could choose a scholarship of up to $3,000 to pay for “intensive tutoring.”
