Teachers spend an average of $475 a year of their own money on classroom materials and supplies, according to a market-research firm.

In its study, the Denver-based Quality Education Data Inc. found that among K-12 teachers, elementary school instructors spent significantly more of their own money than those who teach middle or high school students. Elementary teachers spent an average of $539 per year on classroom supplies, compared with $393 for middle school teachers and $427 for high school teachers.
