The higher their parents’ level of education, the higher level of schooling high school sophomores expect to complete, a federal study says.

Just under 60 percent of students whose parents had a high school education or less expected their highest level of education to be a college degree or an advanced degree, it found, compared with 69.9 percent of sophomores whose parents had some college education, 80.4 percent of sophomores whose parents had graduated from college, and 85.5 percent of sophomores whose parents had obtained a graduate or professional degree.

Released by the National Center for Education Statistics, the report surveyed 15,362 sophomores in public and private schools during the spring of the 2001-02 school year.
