Shortfalls in federal funding for after-school programs have put those programs at risk, concludes a survey by the Washington-based Afterschool Alliance.

The survey of 1,600 after-school programs found that such programs are struggling to maintain funding, and that there are not enough spaces for the students who seek them. Seventy-five percent of programs reported they operated at or above capacity during the 2005-06 school year. Programs also reported that the most common response to budget cuts was to raise fees, even though they are serving many students from low-income families.
