Nearly half the children in the United States under the age of 5 are members of minorities, according to recent estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau on race, Hispanic origin, and age.

According to the data, 45 percent of children in that age group are minority-group members, which the bureau defines as any group other than single-race, non-Hispanic whites. Of those minority children, 50 percent are of Hispanic origin.
