Educator and School Awards, Contests, Fellowships, and Other Deadlines

May 12—Student teachers: Applications are due for the National Student Teacher/Intern of the Year Award, sponsored by Kappa Delta Pi and the Association of Teacher Educators. Supervising teachers or professors can nominate student teachers or interns who work full time in preK-12 classrooms and spend the majority of the day instructing students. The winner will receive a $900 award. May 12—Scholarships: Applications are due for various scholarships from Kappa Delta Pi. Undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students in the education field can apply for scholarships that range from $500 to $4,000. May 15—Teacher education: Applications are due for the Scholar Award from the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education. The $2,000 award will support the research of a full-time faculty member at an AILACTE institution. May 16—Teachers: Applications are due for scholarships from the Horace Mann Educators Corporation. Educators with at least two years of teaching experience can apply for scholarships to continue their education at accredited colleges and universities. The 36 awards range from $500 to $5,000. May 31—Call for proposals: Applications are due for presentations at the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement Conference at the Brookings Institution in Washington Nov. 9-11. Conference topics include trends in international mathematics and science, civics education, literacy, and information technology in education. May 31—Rural education: Applications are due for the Communities and Rural Education Service Award from the National Rural Education Association. The $5,000 award will honor one rural school district for its contributions to its community. May 31—Web sites: Applications are due for the 10th annual WebAward Competition, sponsored by the Web Marketing Association. Developers of Web sites for organizations, companies, and the government in 96 industry categories, including education, can submit their work online at www.webaward.org.

June 1—Teacher education: Applications are due for two awards from the Association of Teacher Educators. The Distinguished Research in Teacher Education award honors outstanding research influencing teacher education or student outcomes. The Distinguished Dissertation in Teacher Education award recognizes doctoral-level research in teacher education. June 9—Child services: Applications are due for various awards from the World of Children Inc. Individuals who have contributed significantly to the health, education, and well-being of children will be honored worldwide. Nominations can be submitted online at www.worldofchildren.org.

June 15—Rural education: Applications are due for the 2006 Brzezinszi Award, sponsored by the National Rural Education Association. The $500 awards honor high-quality research on rural education. June 15—Educational travel: Applications are due for an online contest by EF Explore America. Middle school, high school, and college teachers can enter to win an all-expenses paid educational trip to New York City or Washington for themselves and 20 students. Winners are selected at random. Student Scholarships, Contests, and Awards

May 12—Community service: Applications are due for the Presidential Freedom Scholarships, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Each high school in the country may select two juniors or seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to community service for the $1,000 awards. Funding is available for only 6,500 scholarships in 2006, so awards will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. The Corporation for National and Community Service will provide $500 for each award, and the school must obtain an additional $500 from a community or faith-based organization, business, civic group, or other local funding source. May 15—Community service: Applications are due for GameStop Youth Grants from Do Something. Thirty youths ages 25 and younger will be awarded $500 grants to support their community-service projects. Applications are online at www.dosomething.org/awards/grants/apply.

May 15—Scholarships: Applications are due for College Prep Scholarships from QuestBridge. High-achieving students from low-income families are eligible for the prizes that include SAT prep courses and materials, laptop computers, summer study programs, and all-expenses paid college visits. Students can apply online at http://application.questbridge.org.

May 31—Essay contest: Applications are due for the “got breakfast?” Essay Contest, co-sponsored by the Alliance To End Hunger, East Side Entrees, the National Dairy Council, and Share Our Strength. K-12 students are invited to write a 75-word poem, essay, or song about why breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Four winners will receive a Dell laptop computer and will be photographed for the Fall 2006 edition of the “got breakfast?” poster, among other prizes. Contact: “got breakfast?” Essay Contest, P.O. June 1—Arts: Applications are due for the Arts Recognition and Talent Search, sponsored by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. Individual awards ranging from $500 to $10,000 will be presented to a total of 160 high school juniors in the following arts disciplines: dance, film and video, photography, theater, visual arts, voice, writing, and classical, pop, and jazz music. June 1—Community service: Applications are due for Teens, Crime, and the Community grants from the National Crime Prevention Council. The $500 grants will support service-learning projects planned and implemented by youths between the ages of 11 and 19 that address or prevent crime, violence, or drug abuse in their schools or communities. June 9—Community service: Applications are due for “Bee” the Change Community Service Grants, sponsored by Youth Service America and Lionsgate, a film-production and -distribution company.
