Student Scholarships, Contests, and Awards
May 12—Community service: Applications are due for the Presidential Freedom Scholarships, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Each high school in the country may select two juniors or seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to community service for the $1,000 awards. Funding is available for only 6,500 scholarships in 2006, so awards will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. The Corporation for National and Community Service will provide $500 for each award, and the school must obtain an additional $500 from a community or faith-based organization, business, civic group, or other local funding source.
