Survey Tracks Students’ Knowledge of U.S. Economic History

Many students in the United States have a solid knowledge of important aspects of the economic history of this country, suggests a nationwide poll of 1,702 students ages 8 to 18.

For instance, the survey—commissioned by the Stamford, Conn.-based Pitney Bowes Literacy and Education Fund and the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Junior Achievement Worldwide—found that 92 percent of students ages 10 to 15 who took part in the survey could identify cotton as the staple crop of the pre-Civil War South, and 78 percent of them recognized Henry Ford as the father of the assembly line.
