Summary of Grades
New Mexico scores above the average state in three of the four graded policy categories in Quality Counts and just below average in one.
New Mexico does especially well on policies in the standards and accountability category, ranking among the best states in the nation. The state has sanctions in place to hold all low-performing schools accountable for their performance and also provides assistance to those schools. The state’s assessments are aligned to its standards at all grade spans in all of the core subjects, except social studies.
The state also earns higher marks than the average state in teacher quality. The state fares well in the areas of professional support and training and teacher assessments. Aspiring teachers are required to pass basic-skills and subject-knowledge tests to earn their initial licenses, while veteran teachers must undergo performance assessments to reach a more advanced stage of certification.
New Mexico does not fare as well in school climate, earning a below-average grade. The state does not have laws in place to address school harassment or to enforce specific penalties for school violence. But it but does gain points for its efforts related to the upkeep of school facilities and for indicators of class and school size.
In resource equity, New Mexico receives one of the highest grades in the nation. Its wealth-neutrality score indicates that its wealthier and poorer districts have similar per-pupil funding levels.
