“Projections of Education Statistics to 2014" is available from the National Center for Education Statistics.
The federal government expects small increases over the next decade in the number of elementary and secondary students enrolled in public and private schools, a report by the National Center for Education Statistics says.
The report projects an increase of about 4 percent in the number of public school students in preschool through grade 12 between 2002 and 2014, while the number of elementary and secondary students in private schools is expected to increase by 5 percent during that period.
U.S. public and private schools enrolled a record-high number of students—55 million—in the fall of 2002, a 19 percent increase since fall 1989.
