“Smoking Class: How Schools and Channel One Promote Tobacco to Students” is posted by Commercial Alert.
Tobacco imagery appeared in 60 percent of the commercial films that had run advertisements on the school television service Channel One, a report by Commercial Alert has found.
The Portland, Ore.-based watchdog group examined 67 advertisements for movie commercials that were shown on the for-profit school television network from January 2000 to May 2005. It then examined the movies themselves, and found that 40 of the films exposed students to content involving smoking. However, the smoking-related images did not necessarily appear on Channel One.
