To the Editor:

Thank you for the article "Math: the Not-So-Universal Language," (July 13, 2005), which relates how some schools are using innovative strategies to teach math to students with limited English proficiency. But I have a different concern.

It isn’t bad enough that an emphasis on mathematics is displacing music and fine arts classes in the school day. Now officials want to rob music of its true meaning as well as its position in the curriculum. Music really is the universal language.
