Gayle Y. Thieman has been elected the vice president of the National Council for the Social Studies. She begins her term in July, and is then slated to serve a one-year term as president-elect in 2006, and as president in 2007.

A professor at Portland State University’s graduate school of education in Portland, Ore., Ms. Thieman, 55, specializes in curriculum and instruction and in social studies methods.

The Silver Spring, Md.-based NCSS is a professional organization with 26,000 members from the United States and 69 other countries.
