The Michigan Chamber of Commerce has called for abolishing the state board of education and giving the governor the authority to appoint the state schools chief. Under the current system, the state board appoints the superintendent, and the board members are nominated by political parties and elected by voters statewide. Chamber officials said their plan would make the governor more accountable for education.
