A news brief in the State Capitals section of the April 13, 2005, issue of Education Week (“N.H. Board Kills Kindergarten Plan”) erred in saying that New Hampshire is the only state that does not require public school districts to offer kindergarten. According to the Education Commission of the States, six other states also do not mandate kindergarten.

An item in a Reporter’s Notebook in the April 20 issue about the television series “NUMB3RS” misspelled the name of one of the cast members. She is Navi Rawat.

In the same issue, an article on a Harvard University study of fast-track teacher certification (“‘Fast Track’ Teacher-Certification Efforts Are Examined”) included an incorrect reference to the state with the “all purpose” certification program studied. That program is in Massachusetts.

The On Assignment story on student-empowerment efforts in the same issue should have noted that the city of Cleveland mentioned is in Mississippi. Also, the National Service Learning Partnership is based in New York City. Kids Consortium, which collaborated with the Portland Partnership, the United Way, and the Portland, Maine, public schools to establish Youthink, is based in Auburn, Maine.

Further, Youthink gave a $1,300 grant to the Peer Literacy Project. The grant went to a core group of student tutors.

In a letter by Martha Cook that appeared in the April 13, 2005, issue (“Unsatisfied With Text, She Wrote Her Own”), an editing mistake resulted in the misspelling of the word “grammar.” Since Ms. Cook is a teacher of English grammar, as well as the author of a forthcoming book on the subject, we doubly regret the error.
