More than half of high school seniors who participated in a recent survey said they had paying jobs outside of school, and 40 percent of all the students surveyed reported working more than 15 hours a week.
The survey—conducted by researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle—is based on responses from more than 2,100 high school seniors from a metropolitan school district in Washington state. It also found that more than 70 percent of the employed students had what are considered typical jobs for teenagers, such as working in fast-food restaurants or as retail-sales clerks.
