Increasing student achievement through academic and organizational innovation is the mission of Georgia’s charter schools, according to a new strategic plan approved by the state board of education.

The plan, developed by the state education department and the state board’s charter school committee, has several long-term goals.

They include sharing information with all “stakeholders” on the expectations for charter schools, promoting charter schools as an option in districts where schools have not made adequate yearly progress under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, and using outside evaluations and self-assessments to help charter schools improve.

The strategic plan represents the first time the state has crafted a system to support its 35 charter schools, which are public but largely independent schools.
