Schools in the United States estimate they will spend $7.1 billion on technology for the 2004-05 school year, a decrease from actual spending of $7.8 billion for the previous school year, according a recent survey of 493 district technology coordinators.

The survey—conducted by Quality Education Data, a Denver-based market-research firm owned by Scholastic Inc.—also tracked other technology trends.

For instance, more than 40 percent of school districts in the United States will offer their students classes over the Internet during the current school year.
