Carmen Fariña recently became the deputy chancellor for teaching and learning of the 1.1 million-student New York City public school system.

Ms. Fariña, 62, who had been a regional superintendent overseeing four community school districts within the citywide system, had been serving as acting deputy chancellor since Diana Lam resigned from the job in March. ("Key N.Y.C. School Official Forced to Resign," March 17, 2004.)

Ms. Fariña assumed the job on a permanent basis in July.
