Coca-Cola Teacher Awards

The Coca-Cola Foundation recently honored John Michael Harrison and Lily Cabatu Weiss with its 2003 Distinguished Teachers in the Arts awards.

The awards recognize teachers who encourage and support students in the arts. Two educators are recognized every year from among nine disciplines, including dance, film, creative writing, music, photography and theater.

The recipients were honored at the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts’ annual gala and each received a $1,000 cash award.

Other Honors & Awards

Deborah Brant, an English professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was recently presented with the Grawemeyer Award in Education. She was honored for her book “Literacy in American Lives”, which examines how the nation has coped with the pressure to improve literacy in the 20th century. She received a $200,000 prize.

The award, sponsored by the Garwemeyer Foundation at the University of Louisville, honors ideas and works in the arts and sciences.

The Council of Scientific Society Presidents has presented Siegried Engelmann, a professor of education at the University of Oregon, with the 2002 Award for Achievement in Education Research.

He was honored for his Direct Instruction Follow Through, an educational model that helps improve the performance of at-risk students in grades K-3.

Anne Baird, a teacher at Salmen High School in Slidell, La., has been named the 2002 National Teacher of the Year by Chadwick’s of Boston, a national clothing distributor based in West Bridgewater, Mass.

The award honors the efforts and accomplishments of teachers who serve as a positive influence in their school or community. Ms. Baird was chosen from thousands of applicants and received a $1,000 cash prize. Her school also received a $1,000 cash donation.

Jodi Geiger, an agricultural science teacher at Pine Ridge High School in Deltona, Fla., was recently honored with the first Syngenta Advocate for Agricultural Education Award. The award sponsored by Syngenta, an international agribusiness company based in Basel, Switzerland, honors teachers who conduct quality agricultural education programs.

Ms. Geiger received her award at the National Association of Agricultural Educators’ meeting in Las Vegas. She will also receive an all-expense paid trip to Switzerland where she will spend a year working with Syngenta to emphasize the importance of agricultural sciences.
