The nonprofit Manpower Demonstration Research Corp. has hired C. Kent McGuire to be the director of its education, children, and youth department. Based in New York City, the organization conducts research on issues in educational and social policy.

C. Kent McGuire

Mr. McGuire, 46, was the assistant secretary for the office of educational research and improvement at the U.S. Department of Education before accepting the position with the MDRC this month. Prior to that, he held senior positions at the Education Commission of the States, Lilly Endowment, and Pew Charitable Trusts.

Alexander Wohl

Alexander Wohl is the new director of public affairs for the American Federation of Teachers, the nation's second-largest teachers' union, with more than 1 million members.

Mr. Wohl, 39, was the communications director for the U.S. Department of Education before taking the AFT post in January. In his new role with the Washington-based federation, Mr. Wohl will primarily be responsible for dealing with requests from the news media.

Richard W. Riley

Former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley was elected to the KnowledgeWorks Foundation's board of trustees this month. The Cincinnati- based foundation provides funding and leadership for education initiatives nationwide.

Mr. Riley, 68, has also begun working at his Greenville, S.C., law firm—Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough—since completing his eight-year tenure as education secretary last month.
