Beverly J. Hurley

The National Association of Secondary School Principals has named Beverly J. Hurley, the principal at Flagstaff High School in Flagstaff, Ariz., the National High School Principal of the Year for 2001. The Reston, Va.-based association also named Michelle Pedigo, the former principal of Barren County Middle School in Glasgow, Ky., as the 2001 National Middle Level School Principal of the Year.

The winners were chosen from a field of principals from most states, the District of Columbia, New York City, and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools at the high school and middle school levels. Each representative was chosen by his or her state or district as principal of the year for 2000.

Ms. Hurley and Ms. Pedigo each received a $10,000 grant as a national principal of the year. The Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. co-sponsors the awards.

Leah Burns-Atkins

Leah Burns-Atkins has been named the director of the National School Boards Foundation, an arm of the Alexandria, Va.-based National School Boards Association. Ms. Burns previously was the director of advertising and sponsorship sales for the NSBA.

Sonia Hernandez has been named the first president of the LAAMP/LEARN Regional School Reform Alliance in Los Angeles, which seeks to improve public education in Southern California.

Ms. Hernandez most recently served as the deputy superintendent of curriculum and instructional leadership in the California Department of Education. Previously, she was the director of education for the office of then-Gov. Ann Richards of Texas.
