President Clinton recently announced that under the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative, the U.S. departments of Education, Justice, and Health and Human Services have awarded 54 grants totaling $106 million to improve school safety and protect children from violence and drugs. The recipients and grant amounts are listed below by state:

Plant research. To study earth science, ecology, biology, and molecular genetics by growing native plants and conducting laboratory experiments: $4,300 to Harrisonburg High School, Harrisonburg, Va.

Math. Using software to teach students mathematics from pre-algebra to calculus: $3,600 to Highland View Academy, Hagerstown, Md.

Biology. To learn to use microscopes in the biology classroom by studying microscopic organisms living in a pond: $3,850 to Bath Middle School, Bath, Maine.
