American Hero in Education Awards
The 1999 American Hero in Education Awards, sponsored by Reader’s Digest, honored 10 educators identified as solving some of the critical problems facing the nation’s schools. The winners each received $5,000, and their schools each received $10,000.

Education Reporting Awards
The 1998 National Awards for Education Reporting, sponsored by the Education Writers Association, were given to education reporters and writers from print and broadcast media. The awards honor education reporting produced by individuals and published or broadcast last year. The first-place winners, who each received $250 and a plaque, are listed below by category.

The 1999 Awards for Excellence and Innovation, sponsored by the American Association for Career Education, were given to two organizations for excellence and innovation in programs, practices, and publications. The recipients are: Manufacturing Technology Academy, Traverse City Area Intermediate School District, Traverse City, Mich.; and Career Planning Web Site, Thomas More College, Crestview Hills, Ky.
Reading Is Everything Awards
The Reading Is Everything awards, sponsored by Scott Foresman, the elementary educational publisher, and the National Teachers Hall of Fame, have honored 10 reading teachers for their effectiveness in teaching young students to read.

Other Honors and Awards
Dennis Erickson, science teacher, The Latin School of Chicago, was the recipient of the Eudcast Lesson Plan Award, sponsored by Knowledge Adventure, AT&T WorldNet Service, and Compaq Computer Corp. Mr. Erickson was recognized for his project “Hunting for Asteroids,” a program that aids students in discovering new asteroids and comets by using the Internet.
Anne Ford, chairwoman, National Center for Learning Disabilities, has received the Lizette H. Sarnoff Award, presented by the New York City chapter of the National Women’s Division of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Ms. Ford won the award for her achievements in focusing national attention on learning disabilities in children and adults.
