John H. Hollifield Jr., a longtime editor and disseminator of research reports for the Center for the Social Organization of Schools at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, died of cancer Feb. 2. He was 59.

In his three decades with the Baltimore center, Mr. Hollifield coaxed technical jargon into prose on 500 reports. He also wrote and produced newsletters, gave presentations on the center's research projects, and developed curricula to help teachers employ cooperative-learning teaching strategies in their classrooms. In addition, he founded and edited The Journal of Education for Students Placed at Risk with Johns Hopkins researcher Samuel C. Stringfield.--DEBRA VIADERO
