Thirty-six states will hold gubernatorial races this fall. Of those, nine are also asking voters to choose a state schools chief when they go to the polls.

States with governor's races only:

Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, NewHampshire, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Wisconsin

States with both governor's and superintendent's elections:

Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Wyoming
