Other career posts: U.S. Marines Corps, 1953-56. Served as mayor of Young Harris for one year before election to state Senate in 1960. During two terms in Senate, also taught history at Young Harris College. Executive director, Democratic Party of Georgia, 1971-73. Served four terms as lieutenant governor before being elected governor in 1990.

Personal: Married, with two sons, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
