Library Association Challenges ‘Indecency’ Ban in New Law
The American Library Association has challenged in federal court a new law that bans transmission of “indecent” material to minors over the Internet.
The ALA, leading a coalition of 22 groups, charges that the wording of one section of the recently signed federal telecommunications-reform law, is so vague as to have a “chilling effect” on constitutionally protected speech.
The suit will be consolidated with a similar complaint filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. A federal three-judge panel is expected to hold a hearing on the suits later this month. Enforcement of the law has been suspended until then.
