Sylvan Learning Centers Inc. has announced plans to buy two companies involved in training and tutoring.
Officials from the Columbia, Md.-based company--best known for its learning centers in office buildings and shopping complexes--last week signed a letter of intent to buy the Michigan-based Pace Group.
The Pace Group provides on-site education services to large and mid-sized corporations across the country. Sylvan officials said they hoped that buying the company would complement their existing workplace-based basic-skills programs, known as Sylvan-At-Work.
Sylvan also agreed this month to purchase the Philadelphia-based Remedial Education and Diagnostic Services Inc.--a move that will mark Sylvan’s entry into the parochial school market. Read offers tutoring services to disadvantaged children in private and parochial schools.
