Indian Education Academic Standards
The Bureau of Indian Affairs has revised its minimum academic standards for all b.i.a. schools, including a requirement that each school write a statement on expected student outcomes, to bring them in line with the Goals 2000: Educate America Act. The notice appeared in the Dec. 1 Federal Register; the new regulations took effect on Dec. 1.
Direct Lending Final Rules
The Education Department published in the Dec. 1 Federal Register final rules for the new direct-loan program for college students, incorporating the results of so-called negotiated rulemaking. One significant change from earlier proposed rules reduces the amount of interest that can accrue when borrowers with low incomes opt to make smaller payments. The rules take effect July 1, 1995.
