Legislative Action

Childhood Immunization

The Senate Appropriations subcommittee on health and education concluded hearings last month on the Clinton Administration’s Childhood Immunization Initiative.

Health-Care Reform
HR 3600

The House Subcommittee on Labor-Management Relations last week approved its version of health-care-reform legislation by a vote of 17 to 10.

Inspectors General

The inspectors general for the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education departments testified last month before the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that oversees funding for those departments. The commissioner of the Social Security Administration also testified on a child-related program within that agency.

Minorities in Higher Education

The Senate Subcommittee on Education, Arts, and Humanities last month held a hearing on minorities in higher education, focusing on student financial aid.

Youth Violence

In testimony last month before the Senate Subcommittee on Children, Family, Drugs, and Alcoholism, Attorney General Janet Reno hailed the violence-prevention efforts targeted at young people in the House version of the crime bill pending before Congress.
