The state of Florida last week filed suit against the federal government to recoup money that officials say the state spent to educate and provide health care and other services to illegal immigrants.

In the lawsuit, the first of its kind to be filed by a state, Florida is seeking $1.5 billion to cover what it says is a decade's worth of expenditures.

Gov. Lawton Chiles and the legislature authorized a study last year to document the costs of immigration. That study was released last month.

There are about 345,000 undocumented immigrants in Florida.
