Elementary and Secondary Education

The Senate Subcommittee on Education, Arts, and Humanities last week continued hearings on reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, focusing on drug-free schools, dropout prevention, bilingual education, and magnet schools.

School-Lunch Program
HR 8

The House Subcommittee on Elementary, Secondary, and Vocational Education last week held two hearings on reauthorization of the National School Lunch Act and the Child Nutrition Act, focusing on the distribution of food, the availability of "fast food'' in schools, and feeding programs for poor women and infants.

Special Education

The House Subcommittee on Select Education and Civil Rights last week continued hearings on reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, with testimony from members of Congress.

Default Exemptions

The House last week approved legislation, by a vote of 283 to 186, that would extend an exemption from student-loan-default regulations for historically black institutions and tribal colleges, sending the measure to President Clinton.
